Golf at our school is a remembrance of humility, self-improvement and competitiveness. It reminds students at our school to fight for themselves and that you can get better but you need to be willing to put in the work. Not only is it great for self-improvement, but it also helps students to work as a team.
This season, just like any other sport, has had its ups and downs, and for people playing golf, a large bit of their struggles comes from not being confident enough. Kaleb MacNutt, a junior at our school, thinks that it is important for the team not to get so down on themselves and to focus on the positive.
“Just staying motivated and confident in ourselves because after we have a bad round we tend to say we’re not as good as we think we are,” Kaleb MacNutt said, “We kinda doubt ourselves and our team.”
But in order to have some of the best days and strongest matches, our school’s golf players do many things to prepare. Some stay super hydrated while others make sure to get a few good swings in before a match. For Thatcher Wyatt (29), he makes sure to get lots of practice before a match.
“I go to the putting green to practice putting and chipping before I tee off,” Thatcher Wyatt says.
Some things are different for different people, for example, Kaleb MacNutt doesn’t really do anything in specific and kind of just pumps himself up.
“I don’t really prepare, I just kinda warm up. I try to lock in with some music, do a couple of putts,” Kaleb says, “I go to the driving range to make sure I’m hitting my shots well and just try to focus on my own game.”
Coach Cella is the head golf coach for both boys and girls at our school. As soon as he was offered the opportunity to be the head coach, he took it and it made him realize how important and great the sport is.
“I’ve grown to love coaching golf because it’s so different from traditional team sports. It really emphasizes individual accountability—players can’t blame anyone else; their performance is entirely on them,” Cella said.
Golf is a sport built off of self improvement and helpful friends to get each other through each match. It’s more than hitting a ball. It’s all about working together and finding family in the people our students play with.
