To sum up 2024 for movies in a few words, it was pretty fantastic. There were lots of hits along with some misses, but it overall made one of the better years so far this decade. Some of the misses however may be a surprising to some.
For instance, movies like “Joker: Folie à Deux” and “Madame Web” proved to be huge disappointments in the box office while also gaining extremely negative feedback. They are both types of superhero films with some anticipation towards their release; although “Madame Web” had much less of that rather than the second “Joker.” Some were predicted to be rough upon release, though. “Borderlands” proved to be a huge miss in video game adaptations despite having a potentially fun cast playing the game’s characters. Or there was “Red One,” a dismal attempt at combining action and comedy under a Christmas scenario, with actors like Dwayne Johnson and Jk Simmons not even being able to save it with their acting and comedic jabs.
Disney did have a couple of better movies this year compared to others, with “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool and Wolverine” being pretty great, however “Moana 2” recently came out to poor reception, mostly concluding how clearly this was meant to be separated episodes of TV show rather than a full length movie.
Horror this year had an abundant amount of releases, with some rough patches such as “Tarot” and “Nightswim.” However, the standouts seemed endless. “Alien: Romulus” proved to be another successful addition to its franchise, “Longlegs” was a successfully eerie take on the crime thriller genre, “The Substance” was a wildly grotesque and an angry statement towards how women are affected within the movie and fashion industry, and “I Saw The TV Glow” was an uneasy yet emotionally powerful film that explores the transgender experience, and how the idea of nostalgia is yearningly euphoric yet completely destructive.
And while there were some disappointments from highly anticipated movies this year, “Dune 2” proved to absolutely be worth all of the hype, building up from the first movie to create an even more transcendent movie experience with larger scope, complex character development, and realistic yet amazing looking effects, settings, and music.
2024 has proved to be another year’s worth of amazing tales and stories to note, and while not all of it was great, it still is one of the better years for movies this decade so far.
