Meet Meghan Menke, a senior at our high school who has been participating in wrestling for five years.
While growing up and always watching her brothers excel in wrestling, Menke was able to recognize how fun it looked and decided to give it a try.
“My favorite part of wrestling has always been traveling to different schools and areas,” Menke said.
When motivating herself at tournaments, Menke makes sure to stay out of her head. Menke often tries to reminds herself what she is capable of and remembers to trust herself. Wrestling is more than just a sport for Menke. It is filled with accomplishments and memories.
“I hope to get a sense of accomplishment and confidence from wrestling,” Menke said.
During Menke’s first match of this season she won her weight class, followed up with a second champion title at her past match at Fort Zumwalt North last weekend.
“For my finals match at FZN, I had to kind of feel out how she wrestles first and I soon realized that she wasn’t going to be the one to take the first shot and was what I call a “head rider” (when someone just kind of keeps attacking your face and hangs onto your head a lot),” Menke said. “So I decided to use that to get the first shot and then gain a couple back points. My opponent chose bottom for the second round, so right when the bell rang, I broke her down and pinned her.”
Menke plans on progressing and improving a lot through wrestling so she will be able to apply those skills while furthering her career for wrestling in college at Missouri Baptist University, where she is now committed.
