Can you see the lights, the smell of the mats, the feeling of winning a match, the feeling of getting up and the whole crowd cheering for you and just you – this means the wrestling season is about to start.
Our returning wrestlers are ready to make a comeback and show everyone what they’ve been working on during the off-season.
“My goal is to go to state this year,” Brody Kell (‘27) said.
There is no place like home for our wrestling team, especially when they get the chance to compete right here in front of their friends and family.
“I’m excited for districts, because it’s at North Point this year,” Kell said.
Although some of the seniors from last year have graduated, their impact remains alive. The current wrestlers have learned a lot from watching and practicing with them.
“Learning from the older kids has made me better,” Kell said.
Now, the new generation of wrestlers is stepping up and setting big goals for themselves.
“My goal is to win GACS, be first in the conference and just overall have a dominant performance,” Dominic Holste (‘27) said.
Traveling for meets can be tough, but for this team, it’s part of what makes the season so special. The memories made on the road stick with them just as much as the wins.
“I’m excited to travel with my team,” Holste said.
The wrestlers also find motivation and strength from one another, pushing each other to improve every day in the practice room.
“Everyone just lifts each other up and makes each other better,” Holste said.
The same energy runs through the girls’ team, where determination and teamwork shine just as bright.
“My goal is to be a state champion and I want to play first at districts, and as a team I hope we win the GACS,” Faith Hall(‘26) said.
For Faith, the bonds she’s built with her teammates are one of the best parts of the season.
“I think I’m most excited for team bonding and the bus rides, being around and competing with people,” Hall said.
Wrestling has also helped her grow as both an athlete and a person.
“I have been more dedicated and persistent to be a stronger version of myself,” Hall said.
The same motivation is evident in every corner of the wrestling room.
“ My goal is to work hard and make it to state,” Cole Wicklund (‘26) said.
As the mats fill up, the excitement builds. Practice time is where champions are made.
“I’m excited for a full practice room and to get better,” Wicklund said.
For Cole, the team atmosphere plays a huge role in his success.
“The team has always pushed me to be better by being there and supporting me,” Wicklund said.
Coaches also play a big part in shaping the team’s goals and mindset for the season.
“My goal is to grow our team and then probably win another GAC and qualify more girls for state,” Coach Jackson said.
For Coach Jackson, building strong connections with the wrestlers is just as important as winning matches.
“I’m excited to build relationships with the girls,” Jackson said.
Coaching has also taught her lessons that go beyond the mat.
“I think it’s made me more patient and helped me understand wrestling more,” Jackson said.
Coach Purcell shares similar goals for the season and has high hopes for what the teams can accomplish.
“I would say one of our goals for the upcoming season is to always compete for conference championships on all levels and GACS,” Coach Purcell said.
The anticipation for the season is strong, and the coaches are ready to see their athletes shine.
“I’m excited for the season to start,” Purcell said.
With years of experience, Coach Purcell has seen how each team brings something unique to the table every year.
“I learned new things from the various teams that I have been a part of, and every year it’s different and new,” Purcell said. “In the past, I have learned the importance of teamwork and what student athletes are capable of.”
As the wrestlers step onto the mats this season, their goals are clear and their energy is high. From early morning practices to long bus rides and cheering crowds, one thing is certain: this team is ready to give it their all and make this season one to remember.
