The Swofford Game is a yearly basketball game between the seniors and the staff. This year, our school has decided to continue the tradition and play for another year.
“It is a Wentzville School District tradition for like 20 years or so,” Dr. Adams said.
We do this because there was a coach, Scott Swofford, who worked at Holt for a very long time, and once Timberland opened, he moved there. Unfortunately, he sadly passed away. The schools use this game as a tribute to him and a way to raise money for scholarships for seniors.
“They do this game as a scholarship fundraiser for Wentzville students,” Adams said. “Every high school gives scholarships to their seniors as a result of the proceeds they make from this game.”
When our school first opened, there was no senior class, so we have been doing this for three years, and every year the staff has won, beating the students in the game. Last year Mrs, Peszzelle led the team in scoring.
“I think last year was the best chance the students had of securing a win because we had five staff members so we were tired, but we had a comeback and this year we have a bigger roster so I think we are probably going to do better,” Pezzelle said.
All of the schools in the Wentzville school district participate in this event. Since our school has not been doing it for as long, we don’t receive as large of a crowd, but they are hoping this year is different. The school is hoping to fill the gym.
“We have had less and less kids signing up, which makes it slightly less fun because they would rotate five kids at a time,” Pezzelle said. “It’s fun because teachers get to go up against some of their kids they have in class and trash talk them.”
Many teachers and students are hoping that this event will become more popular among our school, like it is to others in our district. . To show spirit, make signs for your teachers and seniors who are playing in the game. Come to support either the staff or seniors on March 14 at 6 pm.
