With only a couple days left of the school year, many high school students are thrilled to be getting out of school and going on a nice vacation for a couple of months. However, there is one group of students that might not be as thrilled, the 8th graders.
The jump from middle school to high school can be a big change for some people. And while middle school teachers do their best to relieve some of the stress that many students may have, sometimes it isn’t enough.
“I feel both excited and nervous, so I’m nervicited,” Leala Austin (‘28) said
Peyton Burgess (‘28), Leala Austin (‘28) and Bella Smith (‘28) are three 8th graders who are about to go into high school and had some questions that they want answered.
“How long are the classes? Some kids say they’re an hour long each and others say they’re less than 50 minutes,” Austin said
Since the high school runs on a block schedule on Wednesday and Thursday, it just depends on the day. Monday, Tuesday and Friday the hours are 48 minutes, and on Wednesday and Thursday, they are about an hour and a half.
“I’m nervous because it’s a big school and I’m worried about finding my classes,” Burgess said
It is pretty easy to find your classes, each of the hallways is labeled to say which hall you are going into and it’s pretty easy to get the hang of. Before school starts there is always a walk-through where you can go and look for your classes and on the first day there are teachers you can ask for directions.
“I am kinda excited to go to high school next year, I just do not know what to suspect,” Smith said. “Also do we have different schedules every day,”
On Monday, Tuesday and Friday the schedules go like a normal school day with hours first through second. On Wednesday and Thursday, it is different. On Wednesday you have first and second then you go to lunch, and after that you have seventh and eighth. On Thursday you have third and fourth then lunch and den time and after you have sixth. Den time is like a study hall where you can finish up work for classes and get help from other teachers.
Hopefully answering some common questions will make you feel better about going into high school and make you more confident going into the school year.
