November is known as Movember, which is an organization that raises awareness and money for men’s health, particularly to raise awareness about testicular cancer and prostate cancer. HOSA, sponsored by James Craghead, a science teacher here, is hosting a competition that will go from November 13-30.
“It started with no shave November that the organization started,” Craghead said. “They hope to raise awareness that there is help for prostate cancer, mental health, and testicular cancer.”
Several teachers have volunteered to shave their mustaches and then let them grow the entire month of November. Skroblus, Clamors, Coach Zangriles, and Coach Hankins are all participating and they will be photographed and a winner will be chosen each week. The overall winner will get the Ned Flanders Cup.
“A lot of men don’t know how to ask for help or believe they are supposed to,” Craghead said.
Hosa members will take photos of the glorious mustaches. The focus will be on the fundraising part of Movember, and anyone can participate even if you are not growing a mustache.
“Men don’t talk about their mental health enough and they don’t know how to take care of themselves. Society seems to kind of ignore men’s mental health.”
“We are this year really focused on awareness and hoping to spread awareness more,” Craghead said.
