Setting Themselves Up for Victory
After our volleyball girls went through a ton of training and worked incredibly hard during their season it finally paid off when they won the Gateway Athletic Conferences in October of 2022, not just one of our teams but all three of them.
Being a newer school and only having two years of experience, the volleyball team has gone really close among its members from last year. “We’ve all been together since last year, we’re like a family,” Makayla Marcus (‘23), the varsity middle hitter. Marcus went on to explain how she can always rely on her team and coaches even during the off seasons of the sport.
“We’re always practicing together as a team,” Alyssa Dickherber (25’), the junior varsity Defensive Specialist, said. “Practices were more intense some days, but overall it was really worth it.” All three volleyball teams practiced everyday after school everyday, from 2:35 to 4:30, as well as went through several different drills mostly relating to repetition, footwork and passing.
The supportiveness of the coaches, parents, and team members on and off the court brought the teams to where they are today. “Every individual player, no matter what they did, the coaches supported them,” Dickherber said. “They had a really good level of trust in us.”
Everyone knows that there is no better feeling than winning, but the volleyball players weren’t just happy with the win, they were happy that they won together. “I had a lot of confidence,” Sierra Straight (‘26), the freshman libero said about how she felt going into the tournament. Marcus added, “It felt really nice, like we accomplished something together, we felt accomplished.”
Great job ladies on your GAC wins and we hope that you take home the title of GAC Champions not just next year but for years to come!
